You have a photo that's too small. Maybe it's an old picture, a logo someone emailed you, or an image saved from a website years ago. You need it bigger, and every time you enlarge it, it turns into a soft, mushy mess.
Here's what's actually happening, what can realistically be fixed, and how to get the best result available.
Why enlarging makes things blurry
An image is a grid of pixels. A 400 × 300 photo contains exactly 120,000 of them — no more, no less.
To display that image at 800 × 600, the software needs 480,000 pixels. It only has 120,000. The other 360,000 have to come from somewhere, and there's only one place: they're invented, by looking at the real pixels nearby and guessing what should sit between them.
This process is called interpolation, and no amount of it creates information that was never captured. If a face in your photo is twelve pixels wide, there is no eyelash detail hiding in there waiting to be recovered. It simply isn't in the file.
Films lie about this. The "enhance that reflection" scene isn't how images work. Detail below the resolution of the original was never recorded, and nothing can bring it back — a modern AI model can generate a plausible version of it, but it's inventing, not recovering.
What can genuinely be improved
Given that, why bother upscaling at all? Because there's a big difference between enlarging badly and enlarging well. Two things are within reach:
1. Clean enlargement instead of blocky enlargement
A naive resize produces jagged staircase edges and visible squares. A good resize produces smooth edges. Same amount of detail, dramatically different appearance.
2. Restored apparent sharpness
Enlargement always softens edges. Sharpening increases the contrast right at those edges, which makes the image read as crisp again. It isn't adding detail — it's making the detail that survived stand out properly.
Together these turn "obviously stretched" into "acceptably large."
Doing it properly

2× is comfortable for most images. 4× is possible, but be honest about the starting point — a sharp 1,000 px photo at 4× can look fine, while a soft 300 px thumbnail at 4× will look soft and large rather than soft and small.
A rough rule: the sharper and larger the original, the further you can push it.
Step 2: Sharpen, but not too much
Start around 50–60 and adjust while watching the preview. Signs you've gone too far:
- Bright halos outlining dark objects against light backgrounds
- Skin that looks grainy or crunchy
- Noise in flat areas like sky or walls becoming obvious
Back off until those disappear. Slightly under-sharpened looks natural; over-sharpened looks processed, and everyone can tell.
Step 3: Use the comparison slider honestly
Drag the divider back and forth. If you can't see a clear improvement over the plain enlargement, the settings aren't helping — reduce them rather than pushing harder.
Step 4: Adjust contrast last
A small contrast increase (105–115%) often makes an upscaled image feel sharper than sharpening alone does, without introducing halos. Try that before turning sharpening up further.

The mistake that makes everything worse
Upscaling something you've already compressed heavily.
Heavy JPG compression leaves blocky artifacts around edges. When you enlarge, those artifacts get enlarged too — and when you then sharpen, sharpening emphasises them, because to the software they look exactly like edges.
Always start from the best copy you have. A version straight from the camera will upscale far better than the same photo after it has been through a messaging app twice.
